G-G responds to latest cover-up allegations
The Governor-General has issued a detailed statement, responding to a series of allegations that he covered up child sexual abuse while he was Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane.
In a 10-page statement, Dr Peter Hollingworth says he never sought to cover up any allegation of child abuse.
Dr Hollingworth says in retrospect, if faced with the same circumstances today, some of his judgments may have been different.
He says there were no clear guidelines on how to deal with allegations of sex abuse.
The Governor-General says that led to a perception that complaints of sexual abuse were covered up and the process favoured priests over victims.
He says he will fully cooperate with an inquiry that will investigate the incidents.
The Prime Minister has received a copy of the Governor-General s statement.
